This attempt was just as unsuccessful as the first attempt in terms of amount of delicious apples picked and consumed. For various reasons (drought, over productive season last year, blah blah blah) there were NO apples. Seriously, like NONE. It doesn't help that we go to a little organic orchard (Raven Hill) but still. It was depressing... and I felt really bad for the guy who owns the place. Totally lame to have your orchard be so fruitless!
This is the guy who owns Raven Hill Orchards. He's a burly Irish man, with a HUGE knife strapped to his waist... this guy is a trip, seriously. I wish I got a better picture of him!
Max found an apple that wasn't full of worms, bugs, slimy, rotten and/or shriveled. He wasn't too pleased with it though. None of them tasted very good!!
The sky was pretty!
Of course Lia didn't have a problem with the apples. This girl will eat anything!
Cute little Chloe!
Searching desperately for apples!
While the lack of pickable apples had us a bit depressed, the deliciousness at Mom's in Julian made everything better!! We had yummy broccoli cheddar soup (we were hoping for the soup we had last year, chicken and dumpling but this was just as good). And we had apple boysenberry pie and an apple dumpling. Sooo good!!
Here is Lia's consternation after she realized we had known about apple pie her entire life and had only just now decided to let her have some. We don't even need to say how much she ate... she could have eaten the whole slice herself.
Anyway, we ended up having a great time even though we didn't come home with loads up apples as anticipated. We did head to Bates Nut Farm that same day for pumpkins, so that made up for it!! Definitely doing it again next year!!
