TOUGH MUDDER SOCAL 2011!!!
It all started back in January or so when I saw someone had posted a link on Facebook about this crazy race where you do all kinds of wicked stunts, swim through ice, run through fire, get shocked by hundreds of live wires. I immediately thought of our good friend Stephen Baker. He's a little nuts so I thought maybe he'd think it was fun. Then I thought, hey, Tyler and Cory (the actually invited the bro-in-laws, too) should do the race together and Stephen, too! So... a few emails and phone calls back and forth and the boys were signed up and ready to start training!
Tyler trained by running fairly regularly with the kids for longer distances than normal. He did some weight training, too.
The race was at the beautiful Snow Valley ski resort east of LA.
It was 10 miles with an 8,000 ft elevation and the guys did amazing!!
Tyler had a little episode 2/3 of the way through where he was devoid of energy and thought he was going to die. Luckily a few kind fellow racers gave him a snack and then just as he thought he couldn't make it another step, Linda saved the day (she was volunteering that day) by basically giving him her entire lunch. Tyler had a sandwich, cookies, fruit, power bar and a bunch of other stuff and within 10 minutes was ready to run another 10 miles! He finished the race all revved up!
Brooke tried out the first obstacle!
We saw lots of crazy costumes. I'm not sure how comfortable that was for running and obstacles!
The guys had a great time and finished with a good overall time! So proud of them!!
Brooke and I hung out at the bottom of the mountain waiting for the guys to finish while Tyler's dad hiked around the course taking video of them.
The only bad part of the day was that the guys and I got the WORST sunburns of our lives!! I had no idea that the elevation would make the sun so much stronger. I never need to wear sunscreen and didn't even wear any when we were in the Bahamas (spare the lectures) but up there I burned SO bad!! I peeled twice!!
This is the last obstacle, where they had to run through live wires! Brooke and I had a great time watching people totally eat it into the mud. Apparently a few of the wires were super charged and if they got you in the right spot would just lay you out.
Anyway, it was definitely awesome. I hope they do it again next year!!
